The “Before They Were Famous” essay writing contest is designed to encourage high school students to become creative thinkers and writers, expand their knowledge about historical figures who helped shape America (before they became famous) and discover parallels from history that can be applied today.

What do you think of when you hear the name “George Washington”? Is it an accomplished general on the battlefield or the first president of the United States? What about a farmer?

Students from Johnny G. Economedes High School (JGHS), part of the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District, competed to have their essay on “George Washington: the Farmer” published on and receive a scholarship to support their educational goals.

Scholarship funds (up to $5,000 for the winner) will be raised through sales of this t-shirt during a 30-day period. At the end of the period, 30% of sales will be donated to the “education fund” of Mercury One, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Mercury One will award the winner with a scholarship to be used to further the student’s education.
